Many cats suffer from obesity. Obesity is not just a human problem. The world's obesity problem is now as much of our pets lives as it is our own. We humans are suffering from obesity all over the world, a recent study was done in the United Kingdom and the results indicated that 20% of the population is now categorized as obese, while an estimated 25% of all cats are now categorized as being obese. Most Cat Diets
Cat's diets in nature are made up of high protein, high fat and low carbohydrates meals. Natural things for cats to eat when they are in nature are small prey such as mice or small birds. Cats get natural exercise during this process of hunting and as a result it makes for an excellent ideal cat diet which in turn brings good health. It's almost like an Atkins diets for cat, but we'll call this diet (catkins diet) for obvious reasons, ha-ha.
Nowadays cats expect their food in a bowl and they rarely need to go out hunting on their own for food. The bowl is filled up and the owner leaves home and the cat simply gobbles up the food after lazing around all day. This results as you would expect in adding pounds onto the cat.
What can be done?
Consumers want to see their cats enjoying their food. The Definition of Palatability, acceptable or agreeable to the palate or taste. It makes cat owners feel good that their cats rubs up against them, then gobbles up all their food in one swoop. Most cat food companies have taken the easy route to increasing palatability and added increased levels of fat, carbohydrates, salt and sugar directly into the cat food.
Sadly this directly relates to our loving cats poor health. The diets become more like McDonalds and our pets will get fatter, not just cats. It's up to use cat owners to break this bad news pattern and stop buying these foods for the cats that we love.
Final words
Much like humans, overweight cats means increased exposure to diabetes, heart disease, liver issues as well as a significantly shortened life. If we truly love our cats we will not let this become a tragedy that could end our cat's lives early.
