Cute kittens

Kittens are undoubtedly the cutest things that will ever run around in your home. Caring for something so small and cute requires just a tad bit more special attention that the adult cats. This page is dedicated to helping you care for your kitten with some excellent tips.

Three very cute kittens are cuddling and another cute cat by itself.

Kittens learning

Research has shown that interactivity with kittens as early as three weeks after birth does improve the kittens learning ability in its first year. Kittens respond better to humans during their younger years much better when the mother cat is nearby. The mother cat's presence reassures the kitten's safety and this allows them to be at ease when you're handling them nearby.

Handling kittens

You can cause harm to your kitten if you incorrectly handle your kitten. (Do not carry the kitten by the neck or by the hair behind the neck, this is reserved solely for the mother cat). In order to safely pickup a kitten, put one of your hands around the stomach and the other near behind its legs, then you can support the kittens head and neck to prevent an injury from occurring.

Be certain to help your children along the first few times so that they know how to handle the kitten. Kittens generally do not like to be carried around by their owners during their first 8 weeks.

Cleanliness

If you want your kittens to learn to use the litter box, please show the kitten where it is and perhaps even let the kitten watch as the mother uses the litter box. The kitten will eventually take over and begin to use it regularly, kitten see, kitten do. However, if you do not keep this litter box clean, even a kitten will notice a soiled litter box and stop using it eventually. You can pickup scoopers designed for scooping up from the litter box to help keep this clean.

When you change the kittens litter box it's not required, but recommended that you do not use strong disinfectants not specifically designed for use around cats or kittens. You actually can use disinfectants if you want, just remember to rinse the pan extensively before using. Then, for sanitary purposes you will want to wash your hands with soap and warm water after handing litter.
