Cat fights

When cats fight, it's not unlike other small animal fights. The cats usually start-off with standoff which consists of powerful slapping which then leads to grappling on the ground. This page is dedicated to giving you the low down on cat fights.

Pictures

We don't have a specific section in our picture collection for cats fighting, as it's not something that we promote or condone. However, we do have an extensive collection of excellent cat pictures of all types available at our gallery below.

If you see any images in our collection that you believe shouldn't be here or if you have any images that you would like to add, please don't hesitate to contact us as we'd love to hear from you about it.

Cat fighting

Many people are unable to tell the difference between a real cat fight and cats just playing around. During a real cat fight almost always, one cat is screaming around continuously or hissing. It is normal for cats to hiss at each other during play fighting, but not often and not continuously.

One of the cats usually will find a way to get an edge over the other cat and sometimes even appear to be chasing the other cat around. In a play fight, the cats will switch roles and chase each other around back and forth and there will not be any loud screaming or hissing at all.

Just playing

Cats will rarely ever cause any damage to each other during a play fight. If you encounter cats fighting and want to break it up, the best way to do this is to cause a loud distraction noise. Some people have also decided to spill a glass of water simultaneously onto both cats or hose them down to breakup the fight.

Do not attempt to physically separate the cats if they are mingling or swatting in the air as you'll run the risk of being scratched or worse, the cat may also swat at you!

Methods for prevention

One reason for these fights is that each cat has its own internal sense of how much space they should have for their "territory".  If the cat feels limited in its space the cat may attack he offender, usually another cat.  You can rearrange your furniture and sometimes that will satisfy the cat's special requirements.  Try moving your larger furniture into the larger spaces in your home so that it breaks up spaces into smaller spaces and often that will satisfy the cat's needs.

You can also buy a cat tree, some cat furniture or even a cat house to resolve the space issue.  Designate each cat with their own piece.  Sometimes the cats will also begin to share the pieces and that eliminates the problem as well.
